The Things We Will Do for M&Ms

If you had asked me at the beginning of this week if Katie would be potty trained anytime in the next few months, I would have laughed at you and said, "Absolutely not!"  In fact, I was so assured of this that I retracted her preschool registration and signed her up for a one day a week play class instead.

Last night, Tim was getting the girls ready for bath.  Katie went over to the toilet, lifted up the seat, and looked at Tim like she wanted to try it.  So, he asked her if she wanted to give it a whirl, and she did!  He set her on the seat, and before he knew it, she did her thing and then even wiped!  He quickly texted me to ask me if I had been working on it with her.  I had not because the pediatrician said to wait for Katie to show signs of being ready.  Up until last night, that hadn't really happened.

We both shrugged, hoped it wasn't a fluke, and I vowed to try her on the potty again the next day.  Today, I placed her on the potty 6 times, and 5 of those times ended up with successful deposits.  We didn't even have to wait long.  I would sing about half a song, and we would hear the magical noise that makes all parents of newly potty training children happy.  Katie was thrilled.

Now our new challenge is to figure out how to get her to tell us she has to go.  This isn't such an easy thing considering the language barrier, but I figured that M&Ms would help break that barrier down.  She and I trotted over to Walgreens after her gym class tonight, and we purchased M&Ms.  She wanted them so badly, but I told her, "You only get them if you put pee pees or poo poos on the potty.  You get one for pee pees and two for poo poos."

When we got home, we trotted to the bathroom.  She quickly did her thing and then looked at me and said, "M?"  Smiling, I gladly gave her the little piece of chocolate.  If only all of us could be as thrilled as this little girl with just ONE M&M.  Here's hoping that she remembers the yummy taste and will ask to go to the potty to earn more of them!

And what has become of the preschool registration?  I quickly emailed the director today and begged for her to welcome Katie back to the enrollment.  God had His hand in this, for her spot was still available!

And yes, I know there will be ups and downs with this, but I'm thrilled she wants to do this.  What an exciting time for her!

  1. This worked for our daughter too. She only gets them for her "big number" (and when she remembers that she's entitled to them). I've loved following your blog. Congrats on your beautiful family.
